Room Renting in Nebraska

Whether you are going to college, in the workforce, or both, a little extra cash can go a long way in making your life easier and more enjoyable. Your living arrangement is most likely going to be your largest expense, so cutting those costs by renting a room in a private home, rather than renting an apartment in a crowded complex, makes perfect sense. Depending on the size of the house, the owner may have one room for rent, or more. Room renters not only share living expenses, they also share house chores, allowing more time for preferred activities, studies, or sleep. Many houses with rooms for rent in Nebraska are large and oftentimes beautiful. The “commons area” typically includes a spacious living room, dining room and kitchen. Large porches and decks make excellent gathering places for pre-game festivities, grilling, and relaxing on hot summer nights. Room renters enjoy the camaraderie of their fellow roomies, have built-in study partners, and life-long friends.

Room renting doesn't just benefit the tenant. One of the most effective and increasingly popular methods for creating extra cash flow is for a home owner to rent out one or more bedrooms in their home. Besides the extra income, a trusted tenant can look after the property while the owner is away. Additionally, many room renters are glad to take on small odd jobs around the property for an agreed-upon rent concession. This can include taking care of pets, cutting the grass, shoveling snow, gardening, painting, and other routine maintenance jobs.

Nebraska's largest renting base comes from college students. The University of Nebraska has campuses in the major cities of Omaha and Lincoln, and a campus in the smaller, western community of Kearney. Each of these cities has unique qualities that encompass varying lifestyles. Omaha is the largest city in Nebraska and, as such, has an active and varied night-life. In addition to its museums, art, theater, and sports, Omaha has attractions such as the Henry Doorly Zoo and the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, which connects over 100 miles of nature trails along the Missouri River.

Lincoln is the capital of Nebraska and the second largest city. Lincoln houses the main campus of the University of Nebraska, including Memorial Stadium, home of the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team. Lincoln has a unique night-life centered in its historic downtown section. Lincoln is a family-friendly city and boasts beautiful parks, meandering bike trails, and many family-oriented activities.

Kearney is a western town in Buffalo County, Nebraska, with a population of around 31,000. Kearney is home to the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Kearney is a two hour drive to Lincoln, and less than an hour drive to Grand Island, the third largest city in Nebraska.
